Im doing it without taking out the engine basically for 2 reasons.

1) This way I can build up and connect all the hoses and lines as needed as I build up, just easier for me. ;)
2) I don't have an engine lift...

I'll keep your wise words in mind! would suck to go through all then and end up with scraps. Ill be sure to give you a PM if I get stuck! but I think I more or less have the whole thing figured out! Plus on a later date some of my friends from speedtech are coming by to help me out!

You dont need an engine lift, just a strong beam and a block and tackle ;)

I would make an effort while you have the headers off to check the mounts though, doing anything to the engine/turbo?

Engine mounts are new! previous owner at least did something.

With regards to the engine modification, sadly not at this stage.
However, in the near future you may seem a front mount, slightly larger turbo, bleed valve, and other goodies!

Gotta take this one step at a time! I ain't made of money!

Well my scoobie was 3k, I'm expecting all the parts I need are going to run about 800, and if i need my heads resurfaced then that's another 800.

That's all I'm willing to spend right now!!

However if there is anything else wrong with it I can see money pouring out of my pockets... maybe a ver 5 or 6 sti swap?

Here we go again! Today I only had about 4 hours to play with so I could only go so far...

Valve covers, camshafts, and the timing belt cogs were all that were done for now.

Really nice to see some clean aluminium!!

Also pick up these puppies! I was going to tighten the struts/coilovers since there was a mad knocking noise comming from the front right strut... but then I came across some H&R lowering springs for dirt cheap.

And a close look at the timing belt cover... needs a MAAAAD clean

Another day? Lets work on the Subaru some more!
Today was mostly shopping, got new head gaskets, new intake manifold gaskets, new exhaust manifold gaskets, new valve cover gaskets, new timing belts, new belts to power PS/AC/Alternator, New wipers (Cause mine are s***), about 8L. of 10w30 synthetic oil, radiator flush, antifreeze, and more.... nice little $680 chunk out of my wallet!

Then came home to finish off taking the heads off... Kinda' hard with the engine in the car, however, very achievable!

Heads look pretty good, but they need to be cleaned badly. I don't think they'll need machining!

Image

Head gaskets look a little dodgy... lol

Image
Looks so tiny! them crazy Japanese really know how to squeeze power into small places!

Now all I need to do is CLEAN & put everything back together with the fresh parts!

by the looks of the corrosion looks like it hasn't seen proper coolant for a while

Actually, not corrosion ;)
Oil in the coolant creates a nice slimy gunk...
however I agree it probably hasn't
though doesn't look like anything's warped!

Alright guys! so far I got the headgaskets and heads back on. tomorrow im gonna spend the whole day and try to finish it tomorrow night. gonna be tough work so wish me luck!

To do: Install the cams, valve covers (w/ new gaskets), new spark plugs, new timing belt & tensioner, Timing belt cover (+MAAAAD cleaning), intake manifold (w/ new gasket), re install the ac compressor/PS/Alternator, intercooler, air intake, exhaust manifold (w/ new gaskets), get all the vacuum + coolant + oil lines hooked up, fill up the fluids, turn the key and pray! after that if she runs fill the rad up with some rad cleaner, drive it around a bit, make sure there's no leaks, then drain the rad to rid all the gunk!

Wish me luck everyone!
