^ totally agree with ownTer, when i designed and built my new office, I was very grateful I tested out how much leg room I required ;)

Looks great mate, look forward to updates :D

I would make sure you get the exact desk height you want. Maybe get a new chair if it time before you have it built. Just make sure it can at least fit a filing cabinet under it for storage. I would also pay attention to the finish you put on. Youll want something to stand the test of time. I would also make sure to round off the leading edge of the desk top. Wont dig into you wrist if your arm is hanging off. Also riku's idea of the rounded " corner " is a great idea. Will give you more work space, and not force you to being on either side of a 90 degree angle. You could sit right in the middle . Maybe at least 45 the inside corner where you sit. Would serve the same purpose, just not as soft. I could go on for a while, but will save you the.

Looking good so far man. Keep up the good work.

I also a going to cut a round bit out of the edge that will fit in the corner for cables and what not.

Another great idea. If you plan on 3D Vision or Eyefinity you could put holes for every monitor so there are no wires running all over. Maybe have the middle one would take the mouse and keyboard.

Wish i was gonna be around to see this unfold. But looking at his update rate i should be good for a few months...lol

wow thanks for that feedback :D

the desk is the height it needs to be, he had to come measure my dimensions/the chair i use and all sorts of crap, it's good that it's in school cos there's a teacher to look over and make sure its done right :D
there is a filing cabinet thing being designed. it's going to have a filing cabinet at the bottom and two desk draws above that. it'll be on wheels, and made up so there is a good..i think it was 7cm between the top of the cabinet and the desk, so that i can put paperwork, or mainly my laptop and then slide back under for storage.
i think the plan is to be made out of pine, then lacquered with some kind of clear on top. it's still open for discussion up till it needs to be treated. there's also going to be a kind of 45degree edge thing put on the edge around the desk. mainly for 'technique grades' but it will serve a purpose at the same time.

i did think about the rounded edge thing, but i'm wanting to have the monitors mounted to the wall, which won't work with tthe corner, plus its built so i can just turn to the other side to study and stuff....or put another computer for LAN-ing heaven ahhah.

on the wires thing, i'm planning on having a semi-circle cut into the edge in the middle of where i'll be facing for the computer screen, i'm still not sure whether to put one for keyboard/mouse...and where to place it if i do... and the corner will have a rounded hole for the cables from the actual tower

goddamn thats a lot of writing ahah

on a separate not, i have two lancable faceplates, and 3 15m cables that i'm planning on running under the house to my room, when i finally get time/weather for it. between school and the weather its proving difficult, will update when i get it done

OK!
not the new desk quite yet :(
but i figured i'd write up an update about my new lighting setup, it's kinda in beta-stage atm :p
it's made up of 3 LED strips, 2 switch's and a power plug (that goes into a power socket like a normal lamp! :D) that i ordered off ebay.

the switchbox is made up with my choped up motherboard box and lots of ducktape :D it's looks bad, but it's safe, i assure you :) all soldered and heatshrinked

my plan is to aquire some plexi, put a 90degree bend in it. Mount 4 round rocker switches and have it mounted to the underside of my desk when it comes. i have plans on extra led strips, but for now, it's not worth bothering.

anyway, less chatter, more pictures!

Image
my awesome switchbox, i just needed somewhere to mount my switches :P

Image
whats going on inside :P i forgot to put heatshrink on one of the wires before i soldered it onto the plug like an idiot. haha, but it should be right for now? theres nothing for it to touch.

Image
how they're currently stuck to the back of the monitor, zipties and ducktape :p. i'll go to the shops and get double sided tape in the next couple of days hopefully

Image
the actual 'desk lamp' side. i'm planning on having a shelf above my desk, which i will eventually stick LED's along for the same effect. just a LOT prettier.

Image
the end result! i'm very happy with it for my first run. A few tweaks and changes to be made, but this was really the test to see if this whole idea would work. i really didn't want them to run off my computer power as it's too hard to run cables out of the case around my desk. this was much easier.

Glad your happy with that, personally it would drive me crazy, I spend over 6 hours daily at my computer, sometimes up to 10hr's .. that sort of light, would destroy my eyes :P

But it's a cool mod :)

ok, it's been awhile. Thought i'd check in with some progress...

by that i mean it's done lol
photo's!

the surface is made up of planks being biscuit-joined together (i had no idea what that meant until he showed me) then sanded and all the rest
Image
Image

these are the bracers for the underside of the desk
Image

this is where i should have noticed something
Image

the desk has been constructed the wrong way round...the thin long side should be on the other side to fit in my room...
it's not too big an issue though, we can easily modify it seeing as he's the one that build it from ground up.

thanks guys, it's killing me waiting to get it. It has to go through assessment and a bunch of other BS before it finally comes into my possession :(

going to be amazing when i do though. Hopefully towards the end of the year i'll be buying a dual monitor mount, then at some time after that hopefully another GTX460 and onto a triple monitor setup. timelines sketchy but that's the plan
